'I'm not a coach who talks too much' - Rwanda new boss ahead of WCQ against Super Eagles
Published: March 04, 2025
The Rwandese Federation of Association Football (FERWAFA) has appointed Algerian football tactician Adel Amrouche as the new coach of the national team, the Wasps ahead of crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Nigeria's Super Eagles and Lesotho's Crocodiles this month.
He will have Eric Nshimiyimana as his first assistant while Dr. Carolin Braun will take on the role of second assistant.
The 56-year-old Amrouche replaces German manager Frank Torsten Spittler, whose contract came to an end in December 2024 and was not renewed.
Rwanda, who are topping Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with seven points from four matches, will do battle with Nigeria at the Amahoro Stadium, Kigali on March 21.
Amrouche is a seasoned African coach, having managed Equatorial Guinea, Burundi, Kenya, Libya, Botswana and Tanzania in the past.
In his last visit to Nigeria, a Kenya team coached by Amrouche almost caused by an upset as they were two minutes away from securing a win in a 2014 World Cup qualifier, only for Nnamdi Oduamadi to score a late, late equalizer.
Speaking after his unveiling, Amrouche expressed his readiness for the task but emphasized that success would only be possible with the backing of his employers and the support of Rwandans at large.
In quotes relayed by The New Times, he said: "I work a lot, I'm not a coach who talks too much. Everyone has a role to play for the team's success including the journalists because you are part of the development of football.
"Me alone, I can't do anything. Everyone must get involved."
With four matchdays played, Nigeria find themselves trailing Rwanda, South Africa and the Republic of Benin by four points, leaving them with no room for mistakes in their pursuit of a 2026 World Cup spot.
