Borussia Dortmund sweat over the fitness of Chelsea loanee Chukwuemeka before Lille clash
Published: March 04, 2025
Borussia Dortmund are struggling with the fitness of Carney Chukwuemeka, the Nigeria-eligible midfielder, ahead of the UEFA Champions League clash against Lille on Tuesday night.
Chukwuemeka, who joined Dortmund on loan from Chelsea in the winter window, encountered a small accident during the 2-0 victory over St. Pauli on Saturday.
The situation has sparked concerns about his availability for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash against Lille at Signal Iduna Park.
Speaking during his press conference, Niko Kovac explained the incident and provided an update on the status of the injury.
Despite the accident, Chukwuemeka trained individually on Monday but the manager is still optimistic about his availability ahead of the game against Lille.
Providing an update about his availability, Kovac stated: "He collided with someone in Hamburg and had slight problems with his thigh after the game.
"He trained individually today and we will see how it develops overnight."
Chukwuemeka struggled this campaign with Chelsea before his loan move to Borussia Dortmund.
The 21-year-old didn't make any Premier League appearances but played in five games in the UEFA Conference League and Carabao Cup.
However, since his move to Germany, the young midfielder has made three appearances in the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League.
With a few months left before the end of his loan move, Chukwuemeka would hope to keep impressing at Dortmund to revive his career.
