One to watch: Boniface making inroads at Ipswich Town less than three months after leaving Chelsea
Published: April 22, 2025
London-born Nigerian defender Somto Boniface is already impressing at Ipswich Town, less than three months after joining the Tractor Boys from boyhood club Chelsea, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
An England youth international, Boniface was on the books of Chelsea for nine years before moving on to pastures new in the January transfer window.
Frustrated by a lack of playing time at Chelsea—evident in just three Premier League 2 starts—the left-back is believed to have sought a fresh start elsewhere.
While at Chelsea, Boniface went up against senior sides MK Dons and Oxford United in the EFL Trophy.
On Easter Sunday, he received his first-ever call-up for a Premier League game as Ipswich Town welcomed Arsenal to Portman Road.
However, he has to wait to make his senior debut for Ipswich as he was an unused substitute in the loss to the Gunners.
Ipswich Town's final five Premier League fixtures are now deadrubbers, given that it is all but confirmed that they have been relegated to the Championship, potentially opening the door for Boniface to make his debut this season.
He has cemented his place as a key figure in Ipswich Town U21 setup, scoring against Peterborough United in a Professional Development League clash last month.
Boniface was named Chelsea's Scholar of the Year for the 2022-2023 season.
