'It's not just about scoring' - Hoffenheim coach waxes lyrical about dangerous striker Gift Orban
Published: March 01, 2025
TSG Hoffenheim head coach Christian Ilzer has praised Nigerian striker Gift Orban, highlighting his growing influence in the squad ahead of their Bundesliga clash against VfL Bochum.
Orban is in red-hot form at the moment, netting four goals in his last five appearances in the German top-flight.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Ilzer emphasized that Orban's development is not just about finding the net but also about his overall contribution to the team’s play.
In quotes relayed by Hoffenheim's official website, he stated: "It will be important that we play as a team, that we use our strikers in such a way that they can score.
"When you see how dangerous Gift is in the box, we have to make sure that we use him there more often."
Orban, who joined Hoffenheim in the January transfer window, has been working hard to adapt to the Bundesliga’s physical demands.
Despite facing challenges in adjusting to a new league, the 22-year-old has shown glimpses of the goal-scoring prowess that made him a standout talent in Belgium before his move to Germany.
Ilzer is confident that Orban’s qualities will become even more valuable as he continues to integrate into the team’s playing style.
"He has made good steps, it's not just about scoring, but also about how he works for the team as a whole.
"He has now integrated better and better. This means that his strengths can become a key factor," the Hoffenheim coach added.
Orban’s reputation as a clinical finisher has been well established from his time at KAA Gent, where he impressed with his ability to find space and convert chances with both feet.
His sharp instincts inside the penalty area make him a dangerous threat, something Hoffenheim hopes to utilize more effectively as the season progresses.
The Nigerian forward is known for his intelligent movement, composure in front of goal, and ability to score from various angles.
