Pre-U20 Afcon friendly: Three takeaways from Flying Eagles' 2-0 loss to Young Elephants

Nigeria's Flying Eagles were handed a 2-0 defeat by Ivory Coast’s Young Elephants in their second pre-U20 Africa Cup of Nations friendly on Friday.

While the result was disappointing, there were several important lessons for coach Aliyu Zubairu and his team to take away as they prepare for the upcoming tournament.

Here are three key things learned from the game:

Defensive Vulnerabilities Need Addressing

The Flying Eagles’ defense was exposed early in the match, with Ivory Coast capitalizing on a well-placed shot from Tape Yaya Kader in the 17th minute.

Despite their efforts to regroup, Nigeria struggled to contain the Ivorian attack throughout the game.

The second goal came from a penalty awarded after Odinaka Okoro’s foul in the box, highlighting further defensive frailties.

For Nigeria to have a successful campaign in the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations, strengthening their defense will be crucial.

Missed Opportunities in Attack

While the Flying Eagles enjoyed decent possession, they were unable to break down Ivory Coast's solid defensive setup.

Despite creating a few opportunities, Nigeria's attackers failed to convert.

This inability to capitalize on offensive chances will be a concern for coach Zubairu, who will need to find ways to improve the team’s clinical finishing ahead of the tournament.

The Importance of Discipline

Discipline was another area where the Flying Eagles faltered. Okoro's needless penalty conceded in the second half was a direct result of poor decision-making in the box.

As they face tougher opposition in the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria will need to maintain composure and avoid giving away unnecessary fouls, especially in dangerous areas.

Maintaining discipline both defensively and offensively will be vital in their quest for success.
