Nigeria's Golden Eaglets lost their unbeaten run in the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup as they lost 2-1 to Australia in their last Group B match of the tournament.
With Nigeria winning the previous six meetings between both sides, the Joeys made history after recording their first ever win against the five-time world champions.
The Eaglets coach Manu Garba made four changes to the team that played the previous two group games, dropping the quartet of Daniel Jinadu, Wisdom Ubani, Charles Etim and Monsoru Opeyemi in favour of Joseph Oluwabusola, Peter Olawale, Quadri Edun and Akinkunmi Amoo.
The Nigerians dominated proceedings and had four early chances through Akinkunmi Amoo who twice fired shots from long range and the duo of Olakunle Olusegun and Samson Tijani.
But it was Australia who went ahead through Noah Botic in the 13th minute who beat an offside trap to poke home.
The Nigerian keeper Joseph Oluwabusola made a massive instinctive footed save to deny the Aussies a second goal few minutes later.
In the 21st minute Peter Olawale equalised for Nigeria but despite their best efforts to double their advantage the first half ended with a goal apiece for both teams.
The Eaglets had a few scoring chances but moments after Hamzat Ojediran's close shot only hit the side net Australia were gifted a penalty when Usman Ibrahim was deemed to have fouled Caleb Watts - Noah Botic scored from 12 yards to restore Australia's lead.
The ineffective Olusegun was substituted off in place of Ibraheem Jabaar and he did help create a few scoring chances with Amoo the worst culprit for best opportunity missed with his 85th minute pile drive the closest to grabbing an equaliser.
