Feyenoord and Danish-Nigerian coach Babalola go their separate ways ahead of UCL tie v AC Milan

Feyenoord has parted ways with head coach Brian Priske and his backroom staff, including Danish-Nigerian assistant coach Lukas Babalola Andersson, just days before their crucial UEFA Champions League playoff against AC Milan. 

The decision, announced on Monday, comes after a series of inconsistent performances that left the club struggling in the Eredivisie.

In a statement, Feyenoord's general and technical director Dennis te Kloese acknowledged the difficulties that led to the decision. 

"It is very disappointing for all parties that we had to come to this decision. Although Feyenoord achieved some impressive results with Brian, especially in the UEFA Champions League, the first team's performance has been far too inconsistent in recent months, and unfortunately, we see too little structural progress."

The Dutch club currently sits fifth in the Eredivisie, 12 points behind league leaders Ajax. 

Despite notable victories, including a dominant 3-0 win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League group stage, Feyenoord's domestic struggles ultimately forced the club's hand. 

Their recent elimination from the KNVB Cup at the hands of PSV Eindhoven further added to the pressure.

Babalola, who has Nigerian roots, had been an integral part of Feyenoord's tactical setup. 

His departure, alongside Priske and fellow assistant coach Björn Hamberg, signifies a major shake-up in the coaching structure. 

Feyenoord is expected to announce an interim coaching staff soon to oversee the team’s preparations for their Champions League clash.

The timing of these departures is particularly striking, with Feyenoord set to face AC Milan in Rotterdam on Wednesday.

The return leg at the San Siro is scheduled for February 18. With the knockout round at stake, Feyenoord now faces the challenge of regrouping under new leadership in a high-stakes European fixture.

Priske, who took charge in June 2024 following Arne Slot’s departure to Liverpool, had been seen as a promising appointment. 

However, despite moments of brilliance, his tenure was marked by inconsistency. With only 11 wins from 21 league matches, the club struggled to maintain form in domestic competitions.

As Feyenoord navigates this period of transition, all eyes will be on the team’s performance against AC Milan. 

The departure of Babalola and the rest of the coaching staff presents a major test for the squad, which must quickly adapt to new leadership while aiming to keep their European hopes alive.
