Borussia Dortmund coach insists Chelsea loanee Chukwuemeka is not ready for 90 minutes yet
Published: March 14, 2025
Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac has insisted that Chelsea loanee Carney Chukwuemeka is "not in a condition" to play a full 90 minutes yet, despite his evident potential.
Chukwuemeka, who joined Dortmund on loan in the winter transfer window, has struggled with fitness issues, including muscular problems that have limited his appearances.
Despite these setbacks, Kovac remains optimistic about the midfielder's potential and is eager to incorporate him more into the squad.
Speaking at Friday's pre-match press conference, Kovac praised the 21-year-old's qualities, highlighting his dynamism, technique, and directness, which provide Dortmund with a unique dimension.
The coach is clearly a fan of Chukwuemeka's abilities but is taking a cautious approach to his integration, mindful of the need to avoid exacerbating his injury concerns.
"His dynamism, technique, and directness give us a different dimension," Kovac said. "But we also know that he comes from London, where he hasn't played much. As a result, he's not in a condition to play 90 minutes."
Kovac's focus is on managing Chukwuemeka's fitness and ensuring he can contribute consistently over time.
Given the player's injury history, the coach is opting for a gradual buildup in his playing time. At present, Kovac believes that short bursts of activity are the most realistic option.
"We have to build him up step by step, which means 10, 15, 20 minutes, maybe even half an hour. That’s what’s possible at the moment," the Dortmund manager explained.
Kovac’s strategy aims to ensure that Chukwuemeka regains his full fitness without risking further injury setbacks.
As the season progresses, the coach hopes that the midfielder will be able to play more significant roles in matches, especially as the season reaches its crucial stages.
"I would like him to be able to play for longer periods at the end of the season,” Kovac added, expressing his desire to see Chukwuemeka become a more integral part of the squad as he regains match fitness.
For now, Chukwuemeka's role remains limited, but Kovac's cautious optimism shows that Dortmund sees great potential in the young player.
