'Hallmark of goal-getters' - Hoffenheim coach insists Gift Orban not dwelling on misses

Hoffenheim coach Christian Ilzer has showered praise on Super Eagles striker Gift Orban, commending his strong mentality and determination to overcome challenges.

Orban, who made a winter transfer to Hoffenheim, endured a tough spell with Lyon in Ligue 1 but has since rediscovered his scoring touch in the Bundesliga, netting four goals in nine league appearances.

However, his recent performance in Hoffenheim’s 1-1 draw against Heidenheim raised concerns.

Despite numerous opportunities, Orban failed to find the back of the net, prompting questions about his consistency as the club fights to avoid relegation.

Speaking ahead of the team’s next fixture, Ilzer emphasized Orban’s resilience.

"It's a hallmark of goal-getters that they don't dwell on missed chances for too long, but rather trust their own processes and their coolness in the opponent's penalty area," Ilzer told Kicker

"I noticed that he had been training with great concentration."

Despite his impressive comeback, Orban was omitted from Nigeria’s final 23-man squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying fixtures against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, as he was not included in the provisional list.

The snub will likely serve as further motivation for the forward as he would be keen to rediscover his scoring touch when Hoffenheim take on FC St. Pauli at the Millerntor-Stadion on Friday.
