'Must not stay against his will' - Atalanta chief reveals African POTY Lookman is not irreplaceable
Published: January 24, 2025Reigning African Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman has been in scintillating form for Atalanta this season, and his impressive performances have sparked speculation about his future at the club.
Lookman's contract with Atalanta expires in June 2026, and the club's president, Antonio Percassi has revealed plans to keep the 27-year-old at the club beyond the summer.
Lookman has been a revelation since joining Atalanta from RB Leipzig in 2022, establishing himself as one of the top performers in Serie A.
This season, he has already scored 14 goals and provided seven assists in 26 appearances across all competitions.
His impressive form has attracted interest from top clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, who were linked with a move for the Nigerian international last summer.
Despite the interest from other clubs, Atalanta are keen to keep Lookman at the club.
The Nigerian striker has been instrumental in the team's success, and his departure would be a significant blow.
However, Lookman's contract situation means that Atalanta face a challenge in keeping him at the club beyond the summer.
The club's president Antonio Percassi has revealed while Atalanta are keen to keep Lookman, they will not stand in his way if he decides to leave the club.
"We'll do everything, but he must not stay against his will," Percassi told Corriere Della Sera.
"After all, we have already replaced Zapata, Muriel and Gomez."
Lookman's future at Atalanta remains uncertain, and Atalanta will be hoping to keep the Nigerian international at the club beyond the summer, but it remains to be seen whether they can persuade him to stay.
