'Really good news' - Southampton coach provides fresh update on Onuachu's injury
Published: November 29, 2024Southampton manager Russell Martin addressed the media on Thursday, on the eve of his side's Premier League clash against Brighton & Hove, and as expected, offered a fitness update on his squad.
Martin confirmed that Paul Onuachu underwent a late fitness test before the trip to Brighton & Hove.
The Nigeria national teamer, making a rare start for the Saints, subbed out after 51 minutes during Southampton's 3-2 loss to table toppers Liverpool last weekend.
In real time, Onuachu's injury looked bad as the tall center forward had to be helped off the pitch after receiving treatment.
Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo attempted to impede his progress, resulting in a trip that appeared soft but ultimately led to Onuachu's premature exit from the match.
Martin remains hopeful that Onuachu will be fit to face the Seagulls, noting that the injury is not as bad as first feared.
"Paul's being assessed, so fingers crossed Paul will come through alright," Martin told reporters.
“It’s not a bad injury at all which is really good news for us, just a niggle so hopefully we can manage that and he can be involved.”
Onuachu endeared himself to Southampton fans with his brilliant performance against Liverpool, showcasing his skill by executing a no-look pass during the game.
The FC Ebedei product was heavily linked with a return to Trabzonspor in the summer transfer window but the Turkish Super Lig club were priced out of a move.
