'Was amazing' - Former Celtic striker insists Balogun must keep his spot in Rangers backline
Published: April 25, 2024Former West Ham United and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has insisted that Leon Balogun must keep his spot in Rangers backline following his outstanding display during the Scottish FA Cup semifinal clash against Hearts .
The Nigeria international has been out of favour under two different coaches at Rangers since his return to the Ibrox Stadium last summer, making fifteen starts from a possible 53 in all competitions and was left out of the Europa League squad.
One of the central defenders who is ahead of Balogun in manager Philippe Clement's pecking order is Connor Goldson who has started in 41 matches this season.
The dilemma facing the Belgian football tactician before Rangers' trip to St. Mirren is what to do with Balogun, who performed well in the 2-0 win versus Heart of Midlothian FC.
Balogun's contract with Rangers is set to expire in two months, and he will leave as a free agent at the end of the season unless he is offered a new contract.
Frank McAvennie reckons that the Nigerian has unfinished business at Rangers and should be offered a new deal.
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: "Balogun played very well against Hearts. I don’t know what’s happened to Goldson, whether he’s been found out or if Clement is giving him a break.
"I think that Rangers fans will be frustrated if Goldson comes straight back in after Balogun’s performance now.
"Balogun was amazing along with John Souttar.
“Rangers are going to need all their players for this run-in, but I think he deserves a new deal despite his age."
Club legend Ally McCoist stated recently that there is no better player in the central defensive position than Balogun at Rangers.
