Rooney feasted his eyes on two teenagers of Nigerian descent who were in action for their respective teams.
Red Devils fullback Habeeb Ogunneye came off the bench to replace Louis Jackson at halftime, while City forward Justin Oboavwoduo played the full game.
Manchester United were two goals up at the break courtesy of Ethan Wheatley's brace, but Stephan Mfuni nodded home a cross from Mukasa in the 85th minute to set up a nervy ending.
Ogunneye has impressed for United's U18s and U21s in the ongoing season, which has earned him the opportunity to train with the first team on multiple occasions since the start of 2024.
The 18-year-old was an unused substitute in Premier League matches against Manchester City, Everton, Liverpool and Bournemouth, and was also on the bench for the FA Cup wins versus Nottingham Forest and Coventry City.
