'The whole world knows' - Osimhen reiterates he is inspired by Chelsea legend Drogba
Published: April 23, 2024Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has reiterated that Chelsea legend and two-time African Footballer of the Year Didier Drogba is his mentor.
Osimhen has previously been compared with the retired Ivory Coast international and it was no surprise when he declared his affection for the latter.
The 25-year-old's hold up play, aerial and physical presence reminds a lot of fans about Drogba who established himself as one of the finest strikers in Premier League history during his stay at the Stamford Bridge.
The former Ivorian star has also been impressed with the Nigerian striker and a bromance seems to have been developed between the duo.
This has also led to the belief that the 2012 AFCON top scorer might be persuading the Napoli star to join his former side Chelsea with the London-based club being one of his suitors.
In quotes relayed by Il Matino, Osimhen once again declared his admiration for Drogba and how his style of play has been influenced by the two-time Premier League Golden Boot winner.
"At Charleroi it was a key moment, the moment that made me become the Victor Osimhen you see now, those people gave me the opportunity to write my story, to launch my career from the bottom.
"The whole world knows that I am inspired by Didier Drogba. When I was a child, they introduced me to his style of football, the passionate fans, and then the whole community pushed me to follow him.
"And so, I started to take an interest in him, to watch many clips, and learn from his movements and integrate them into my way of playing."
By winning the CAF Men's Player of the Year last year, the Nigeria international has also put himself on the path of emulating the Blues legend.
It will be interesting to see if he will follow the footpath of his mentor by joining Chelsea in the summer and write his name in the annals of the club.
