Pundit reveals he'd look at loaning out Chukwuemeka, sign Osimhen if he were Chelsea boss
Published: April 08, 2023
The Mirror's Sports Features Editor, Mark Jones has revealed some of the changes he would make to the squad ahead of next season if he were Chelsea manager.
Chelsea have struggled in domestic competitions this season and as a result Graham Potter was fired earlier this week with the club's iconic midfielder Frank Lampard replacing him on a caretaker basis until the end of the 2022-2023 season.
In order to challenge for the Premier League title next season, the Chelsea squad has to be rebuilt.
The Blues' hierarchy will be looking at reducing a bloated playing squad, especially if there's no European football.
Jones has identified England U20 international of Nigerian descent, Carney Chukwuemeka as one of the players he'd consider loaning out.
He wrote in his column for The Mirror : "So that's six out permanently, and I'd look at loaning out the likes of David Datro Fofana , Carney Chukwuemeka , Lewis Hall and Omari Hutchinson , while I'm not signing Denis Zakaria permanently after his loan deal. So that's 11 out."
A loan move would make sense for Chukwuemeka as he has struggled for game time since his arrival from Aston Villa last summer, making just one start in all competitions.
With regards to incoming transfers, Chelsea have been heavily linked with a move for Victor Osimhen but face competition for the signature of the Nigeria national teamer, with Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain also credited with an interest.
Jones has urged Chelsea to go all out to sign the Napoli man to revolutionize the attack.
"In attack there's Kai Havertz, Raheem Sterling, Noni Madueke and Mykhaylo Mudryk, so a couple of new additions are needed.
"One is obvious, with Joao Felix completing a permanent move from Atletico Madrid, and then I'd go all out for Victor Osimhen from Napoli who is exactly the type of No.9 Chelsea are missing right now.
"In fact he'd probably take the No.9 shirt, but is good enough to lift the curse," he concluded.
