Legendary Dutch coach makes scathing remark on Bassey's transfer from Rangers to Ajax

Legendary Dutch coach Aad de Mos made reference to Calvin Bassey as he delivered a harsh verdict on Ajax Amsterdam's transfer business last summer.
The reigning Dutch Eredivisie champions had plenty of money in their transfer kitty following the sales of Antony and Lisandro Martínez to Manchester United for a combined fee in the region of 150 million euros.
The South American duo reunited with Erik ten Hag, who was appointed Red Devils coach before they headed to England.
Ajax recruitment team recommended the signing of Bassey as a replacement for Martínez, with the Dutch giants bringing in the versatile defender from Glasgow Rangers for an initial fee of 23 million euros that could rise to 26.5 million euros with variables included.
Bassey has not quite replicated the form that Martinez was known for in the Netherlands on a consistent basis, and lost his spot in the starting lineup after the dismissal of Alfred Schreuder.
Aad de Mos reckons that it was a bad purchase and added that the Nigeria international was not extensively scouted before his move to the Netherlands.
"Last summer, Ajax received 120 million euros for Antony and Lisandro Martínez together - a gift from their ex-trainer Ten Hag," Aad de Mos told Het Laatste Nieuws, via Voetbal Primeur.
"With that money, Ajax realized ten bad buys. You just have to be able to do it.
"For example, they bought Calvin Bassey from Glasgow Rangers for 25 million euros – that's the biggest wrong-way driver in the history of European football; an indictment against Ajax's youth policy!
"Then I ask you: Did they scout Bassey with their own eyes?"
Bassey was a non-playing substitute in Ajax's first match after the international break, a goalless draw at Go Ahead Eagles.
