The reason Man Utd loanee Shoretire was left out of Bolton's Papa Johns Trophy-winning squad
Published: April 02, 2023
Bolton Wanderers have won the Papa Johns Trophy after thrashing Plymouth Argyle 4-0 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
The Trotters made a bit of history as it was the biggest winning margin in the final of the Papa Johns Trophy.
When Bolton manager Ian Evatt announced his matchday squad ahead of kickoff, there was no place for Manchester United loanee Shola Shoretire, who has been involved in every single game played by the club in the League One since his arrival at the University of Bolton Stadium.
Shoretire sat out today's clash against Plymouth Argyle because he was cup-tied, having represented his parent club Manchester United in the same competition this season.
The 19-year-old featured against Fleetwood Town, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bolton before heading on loan in the January transfer window.
Another attack-minded player of Nigerian descent in Victor Adeboyejo wasn't allowed to play against Plymouth Argyle because he represented Burton Albion in the Papa Johns Trophy earlier in the season.
In front of 80,000 fans at Wembley, Bolton won the competition for the first time since 1989, thanks to goals from Kyle Dempsey, Dion Charles, Elias Kachunga and Gethin Jones.
