2019 Golden Eaglets invitee, Flower & Mendel-Idowu win U18 PL Cup with Chelsea
Published: May 04, 2022Three teenagers of Nigerian descent in the shape of goalkeeper Prince Adegoke, winger Tudor Mendel-Idowu and striker Louis Flower have won the U18 Premier League Cup with Chelsea.
The young Blues were crowed champions after a 2-1 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Wednesday evening.
2019 Golden Eaglets invitee Adegoke and Mendel-Idowu were non-playing substitutes and Flower entered the game as a substitute in the third minute of stoppage time.
A fourth player of Nigerian descent in Michael Olakigbe, who has made 21 appearances in this season's U18 Premier League, was surprisingly an unused substitute for the Cottagers.
In a tightly contested affair, Leo Castledine curled the ball beyond the Fulham goalkeeper to open the scoring inside five minutes but it was 1-1 at the break as Luke Harris restored parity by smashing the ball into the top corner after pouncing on a loose ball.
Jude Soonsup-Bell, with a brilliant left-footed effort, grabbed the game-winning goal with ten minutes remaining.
Tariq Uwakwe and Faustino Anjorin played for the Chelsea side that defeated Joshua Oluwayemi's Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the inaugural edition of the U18 Premier League Cup in March 2018.
