Academy stars Ogungbo and Azeez involved in Arsenal last workout before Southampton
Published: April 15, 2022Arsenal trained on Friday at London Colney before their trip to the South Coast for a Premier League meeting with Southampton.
The Gunners are seeking a return to winning ways when they face the Saints at the St Mary's Stadium and they have no more margin for error in the race for a top four position with a trip to Chelsea coming up next Wednesday.
Mikel Arteta is still without his first choice left-back Kieran Tierney and central midfielder Thomas Partey who are all but ruled out for the remainder of the season due to injuries.
Two teenagers of Nigerian descent Mazeed Ogungbo and Miguel Azeez have benefited from the absence of the Scotland and Ghana internationals, having trained with the first team for most part of this week.
Left-sided central defender Ogungbo and central midfielder Azeez are in the provisional squad for the visit to Southampton as they participated in Friday's training session.
There are currently at least three players above Azeez in Arteta's pecking order of central midfielders namely Granit Xhaka, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Mohamed Elneny, so it would be a bonus for the England youth international to be named in the matchday squad on Saturday.
Azeez and Ogungbo play for Arsenal's development team but the former spent the first half of the campaign at Portsmouth.
