WSL : Leicester City's Nigeria defender suffers head-related injury in 9-0 loss to Chelsea
Published: March 27, 2022
Nigeria women's national team coach Randy Waldrum will monitor the fitness of his key central defender Ashleigh Plumptre ahead of his squad announcement for two glamour friendlies against Canada next month.
The Leicester City star was forced off injured after thirty minutes as the Foxes were hammered 9-0 by Chelsea in a Women's Super League match at the King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Plumptre was unable to continue the match after taking a knock to the head and was wearing the captain's armband before she was replaced by Sophie Barker.
Prior to her substitution, the WSL champions were leading 5-0 courtesy of strikes from Reitan, Kerr, England (2) and Nouwen.
The Nigeria national teamer suffered the head-related injury as she was trying to prevent the ball from crossing the line.
The 23-year-old has had fitness issues since returning to Leicester late February after international duty with the Super Falcons, missing games against Chelsea and Manchester United through illness.
Plumptre starred as Nigeria qualified
for the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations, helping the Super Falcons
post two clean sheets in the wins against Ivory Coast home and away.
The doubleheader next month sees the Super Falcons face the Canadians at BC Place in Vancouver on April 8 and Langford’s Starlight Stadium on Vancouver Island three days later.
