Nigeria-eligible defender reveals he signed a professional contract with Sunderland
Nigeria-eligible defender Ugonna Emenike has revealed that he signed a professional contract with League One side Sunderland.

The Black Cats confirmed the capture of Emenike a week ago following a successful trial period in which he featured seven times but didn't disclose the type of contract he signed.

Emenike's agreement with Sunderland will keep him at the Stadium of Light until at least the end of the 2021-2022 season.

The 18-year-old previously spent time at the Boreham Wood academy before spells with Clapton and Leatherhead, from where he joined Sunderland.

The Anglo-Nigerian has been signed for Sunderland U23s team and will be coached by Mike Dodds and Michael Proctor.

Writing on Instagram on Wednesday, Emenike stated : "Happy to sign my first professional contract @sunderlandafcofficial really proud moment for me and my family.

"Delighted for what the future holds glory to God".

Emenike will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Sunderland academy product Josh Maja who rose through the youth team ranks before making his senior debut for the Black Cats.
