Southampton, Burnley linked with moves for AFCON-bound Nigeria star
Published: December 21, 2021Southampton have reportedly joined the race to sign red-hot Glasgow Rangers star Joe Aribo ahead of the January transfer window.
The Daily Record has reported that the Saints had a scout in attendance during Rangers' most recent Premiership match against Dundee United and his brief was to run the rule over the Nigeria international.
Aribo, who was walking a disciplinary tightrope having accumulated five cautions in previous matches, initially started the game on the bench and was introduced in the 64th minute with Giovanni van Bronckhorst's team in search of the opening goal.
The Saints have received glowing reports about Aribo and have to move quickly to tie up a deal for the versatile midfielder as they face competition for his signature.
The report added that Burnley and Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa are also interested in the 25-year-old.
Watford, Brentford and Crystal Palace have also been credited with an interest in the former Charlton Athletic man.
Barring an injury, Aribo is set to represent Nigeria in his first major tournament, the Africa Cup of Nations which kicks off in Cameroon on January 9.
