Akpeyi Finally Receives Phone Call From Nigeria Officials As Ikeme Withdraws From Squad
Published: November 02, 2016Wolverhampton Wanderers glovesman Carl Ikeme has been ruled out of Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier against Algeria on November 12 due to an injury he suffered last weekend.
The Championship club have officially communicated to the Nigeria Football Federation that the goalkeeper will not recover from a hip injury before the game in Uyo.
The NFF have moved fast to hand a late call-up to Chippa United goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi as a replacement for Ikeme.
Akpeyi had understudied Ikeme in March when the Super Eagles faced off with Egypt in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers and was chosen ahead of other goalkeepers after the Wolves star pulled out of the return leg in Alexandria.
In nine appearances for Chippa United across all competitions this season, Akpeyi has posted three shutouts and conceded seven goals.
