Three key steps Boniface must take to win back Alonso's trust at Bayer Leverkusen
Published: March 08, 2025
Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface has been struggling for form in recent weeks at Bayer Leverkusen.
The Nigerian international has seen his starting spot taken by Patrik Schick and Nathan Tella, raising concerns about his future with the Bundesliga champions ahead of the summer transfer window.
Despite starting the season strongly, Boniface has only started one of the last four league matches, accumulating just 96 minutes of playing time during this period.
To reclaim his position in the squad, the 24-year-old must address certain key aspects of his game.
Allnigeriasoccer.com presents three things Boniface must improve on to regain the trust of manager Xabi Alonso.
Increase His Work Rate Off the Ball
Since returning from injury, Boniface has struggled to fit into Alonso’s tactical system, which requires high pressing and intense work off the ball.
Nathan Tella, one of his main competitors, thrives in this system due to his relentless work rate and versatility.
Statistically, Tella has averaged 0.4 tackles per game in the Bundesliga this season, compared to Boniface’s 0.3 tackles per game.
To regain his spot, Boniface must show greater energy and defensive commitment to align with Alonso’s tactical demands.
Improve His Finishing
Boniface has scored 10 goals in 20 matches across all competitions, an average of one goal every two games.
While this is a respectable return, his competition in the squad has been more clinical in front of goal.
Patrik Schick, for example, has netted 22 goals in 33 matches across all competitions, making him a more reliable option for Alonso.
To force his way back into the starting lineup, Boniface must improve his conversion rate and make the most of scoring opportunities.
Contribute More to Team Play
Beyond scoring goals, a modern striker is expected to contribute to overall team play.
Boniface has struggled in this area, providing just one assist all season in the Bundesliga. In contrast, Tella has contributed two assists, showing greater involvement in creating chances for teammates.
To convince Alonso of his value, Boniface must improve his link-up play, create more opportunities for his teammates, and enhance his overall impact on the pitch.
Victor Boniface remains a key talent for Bayer Leverkusen, but his recent struggles mean he must work harder to reclaim his starting role.
By increasing his work rate, improving his finishing, and contributing more to team play, the Nigerian forward can regain the trust of Xabi Alonso and re-establish himself as a vital part of the squad.
