What Rangers interim manager Ferguson said about Dessers at beginning of the season

New Rangers interim manager Barry Ferguson has previously expressed his support for Cyriel Dessers, highlighting his attitude and goal-scoring ability while also acknowledging the need for competition in the squad.

Ferguson, who has taken charge following Philippe Clement’s departure, spoke at the beginning of the season about Dessers’ role at the club, pointing out his strengths but also areas where he could improve.

“Listen, he’s scored two goals in two games, 22 goals last year and I don’t think you can get rid of him,” Ferguson was quoted as saying by Rangers News

"I know Rangers still need in my eyes another number nine to come in for competition, but I like the big man’s attitude, sometimes he lacks that bit of quality, but if he had that quality he’d be playing somewhere else in a different league."

Dessers has had a mixed season at Ibrox, scoring 18 goals and providing six assists across all competitions.

While his goal return is respectable, his performances have often been scrutinized, with critics questioning whether he has the consistency and physical presence needed to lead the line for Rangers.

With Ferguson now in charge, the Nigerian striker could be given an opportunity to prove himself under a manager who appreciates his work ethic.

However, Ferguson’s past comments also suggest that he believes Rangers need another quality striker to push Dessers and provide a stronger attacking threat.

The 30-year-old forward has struggled in some matches, particularly against compact defences, where his ability to hold up play and create chances for teammates has been called into question.

His tally of eight goals in 24 league appearances indicates that there is room for improvement if Rangers are to challenge for top honours.

Ferguson’s arrival could lead to tactical changes, potentially benefiting Dessers by providing him with more attacking support or a system that plays to his strengths.

However, the manager’s previous statement makes it clear that while he values Dessers’ contributions, he also sees the need for added firepower.

As Rangers enter a new era under Ferguson’s leadership, the coming months will be crucial for Dessers.

If he can step up and deliver consistently, he may cement his place in the team. But if his struggles persist, Ferguson’s earlier call for another striker could become a reality in the next transfer window.
