Lazio sporting director confirms winter offers for Brighton target Dele-Bashiru were rejected
Published: February 06, 2025Lazio's sporting director, Angelo Fabiani, has confirmed that the club turned down multiple offers for Fisayo Dele-Bashiru during the winter transfer window.
Brighton were interested in signing the Manchester City-reared midfielder but saw their enquiry knocked back by the Biancocelesti.
With Jakub Moder sold to Feyenoord and Julio Enciso sent on loan to Ipswich Town, the Seagulls found themselves in need of midfield reinforcements.
However, Lazio were not ready to part ways with the Nigeria international unless they received a substantial bid too good to turn down.
Dele-Bashiru, who joined Lazio last summer from Turkey's Hatayspor, has faced challenges in adapting to the competitive environment of Serie A.
Since his arrival, the 24-year-old midfielder has managed to find the net only twice in fourteen league appearances, raising concerns about his integration into the squad.
Despite these struggles, Fabiani disclosed that the club received inquiries for not only Dele-Bashiru but also for notable players such as Alessio Romagnoli, Nicolò Rovella, and Tchaouna, all of which were firmly rejected.
Addressing journalists during the press conference to welcome new arrivals, Fabiani stated, "If a club brings 100 million for a player with all the assets, the player leaves. For Romagnoli we said no and they asked us, the same thing for Rovella, Dele-Bashiru and Tchaouna."
He emphasized the assertion underscores Lazio's commitment to retaining its current roster despite the ongoing struggles of some players.
Dele-Bashiru's challenges have been compounded by his lack of a defined position under head coach Marco Baroni, who has utilized him in various roles across the midfield.
This uncertainty has sparked speculation about the midfielder's long-term future with the club.
When pressed about Dele-Bashiru's preferred position, Fabiani referred the matter to Baroni, emphasizing, "This is a technical question that can be asked to Baroni. I do not get involved in the merits of the coach's choices, just as the coach should not get involved in the merits of the club's choices."
As Dele-Bashiru continues to adjust and seek consistent performance within the squad, the pressure is on him to prove that the investment in his signing was justified.
