'We hope' - Bayer Leverkusen coach reveals injury suffered by Nathan Tella 'is not that bad'
Published: February 04, 2025Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has shared insight on Nathan Tella’s injury after the Nigerian midfielder was forced off during their 3-1 victory over TSG Hoffenheim on Sunday.
Tella, who has been in fine form recently, sustained the injury in the first half and was replaced by Emi Buendía.
The 25-year-old has contributed two goals and one assist in his last ten Bundesliga appearances, proving to be a key player for Alonso’s side.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Leverkusen’s upcoming DFB Pokal clash against FC Köln, Alonso played down concerns over Tella’s injury.
"It's not that bad. We hope he'll be there on Wednesday," Alonso said, hinting at a possible return for the Nigerian international.
Tella will be eager to regain full fitness not only to maintain his spot in the squad but also to boost his chances of a call-up for Nigeria’s 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
Despite being able to play in multiple positions, Tella did not feature for Nigeria during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
However, with the Super Eagles struggling in their World Cup qualifying campaign, currently sitting fifth in Group C with three points from four matches, four behind leaders Rwanda and South Africa, his form at Leverkusen could earn him a spot in the squad.
