Done deal: Homegrown player Iheanacho returns to England, joins Middlesbrough on loan
Published: February 03, 2025Through a statement on the official website, Middlesbrough have completed the signing of Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho from Spanish La Liga side Sevilla on loan until the end of the season.
Iheanacho will occupy a homegrown player slot on Boro's Championship roster for the second half of the 2024-2025 campaign, having spent his formative years at Manchester City before turning 21.
The 28-year-old striker brings a wealth of experience to the Riverside Stadium, having played at the highest level for clubs like Manchester City and Leicester City.
Iheanacho's arrival is a major boost to Middlesbrough's league ambitions, as they are currently fifth in the provisional Championship standings.
With over 300 career appearances under his belt, Iheanacho has established himself as a prolific goal-scorer, netting 85 goals and providing numerous assists.
The Nigerian forward began his career at Manchester City, where he won the League Cup as a teenager.
He later joined Leicester City in 2017 and played a key role in the Foxes' FA Cup triumph in 2021.
Iheanacho's experience in the Premier League will undoubtedly be an asset to Middlesbrough as they push for promotion.
Iheanacho's move to Middlesbrough was facilitated by Sevilla, who gave him permission to travel for his medical after leaving him out of training on Sunday.
He had attracted interest from several clubs, including Greek sides PAOK and Panathinaikos, as well as Italian outfit Venezia.
However, Iheanacho prioritized a return to England, and Middlesbrough's ambition and vision ultimately won him over.
