Pundit explains why Osimhen cannot help Galatasaray break Fenerbahce's 36-year-old scoring record
Published: January 15, 2025
Şansal Büyüka, a prominent Turkish football expert, has provided insight into why Galatasaray, despite Victor Osimhen's impressive goal-scoring form, may not be able to surpass Fenerbahçe's long-standing scoring record in a full Super Lig season.
Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray on loan from Napoli, has been in scintillating form, scoring ten goals and providing four assists in just thirteen league matches.
However, Büyüka believes this remarkable contribution alone won't be enough to break the record set by Fenerbahçe.
The Yellow Canaries scored a record 103 goals in the 1988/1989 season, the highest ever in the league's history.
Addressing the possibility of Galatasaray surpassing the 36-year-old scoring record, Büyüka expressed doubts, citing key reasons he believes the feat remains unlikely.
Büyüka emphasized the absence of Mauro Icardi as a crucial factor, suggesting it has significantly impacted the team's overall attacking efficiency and even Osimhen's performance.
"I don't think Galatasaray will surpass Fenerbahçe 's record of 103 goals. Galatasaray scores without Mauro Icardi, but his absence is felt. I think Icardi's absence even affected Victor Osimhen. They played very well in the matches they played together," Büyüka said on the Digitale YouTube channel, as reported by habersarikirmizi.com.
Despite his concerns, Büyüka praised Galatasaray for not being overly reliant on Osimhen, acknowledging the contributions of other key players.
He highlighted Yunus Akgün, Barış Alper Yılmaz, Davinson Sanchez, and Abdülkerim Bardakcı as capable goal scorers who have stepped up when needed.
"When Victor Osimhen stops, there is no problem. Yunus Akgün or Barış Alper Yılmaz come on stage. Even Davinson Sanchez and Abdülkerim Bardakcı can come out and score goals."
