Onuachu scores against Crystal Palace as Southampton battle to avoid 17-year unwanted PL record
Published: April 02, 2025
Southampton striker Paul Onuachu found the back of the net once again as the Saints were held to a 1-1 draw by Crystal Palace at St Mary's on Wednesday night.
Onuachu delivered a powerful header in the 20th minute to give Southampton the lead.
The goal came after a brilliant link-up between Flynn Downes and Mateus Fernandes, with the latter sending a perfect cross into the box.
Onuachu leaped high to meet the ball and directed it into the bottom right corner of the net, marking his fourth goal of the season.
This strike was a timely reminder of Onuachu’s growing influence after a period of struggle since his move to England from Genk.
The Nigerian international had found it difficult to adapt during his first season in the Premier League, failing to score in 11 league appearances.
His form seemed to improve during a loan spell in Turkey’s Super Lig last campaign, but his return to England saw further struggles.
However, Onuachu has rediscovered his form following the appointment of coach Ivan Juric.
Since the coach's arrival, Onuachu has netted four goals, providing renewed hope for the club as they battle relegation.
Before Juric's appointment, Onuachu had gone goal-less in 2024, but his recent performances suggest the striker is finding his rhythm just when Southampton needs it most.
Despite Onuachu’s efforts, the draw leaves Southampton with plenty of work to do as they fight to avoid relegation.
The club is currently in a race to stay out of the Premier League’s bottom three, with the dreaded prospect of finishing with one of the worst records in league history hanging over them.
For coach Ivan Juric, Onuachu's contribution is a glimmer of hope that the team can avoid the ignominy of becoming the Premier League's worst-ever team—a record currently held by Derby County, who finished the 2007/2008 season with just 11 points.
