'Role on the right' - AC Milan coach justifies choosing USMNT star over Chukwueze
Published: December 05, 2024AC Milan coach Paulo Fonseca has explained the reason behind his recent preference for USMNT star Yunus Musah over Samuel Chukwueze.
Musah, who is naturally a midfielder, has been deployed as a right winger in Fonseca's 4-2-3-1 set-up in the last two Serie A fixtures and has given more defensive solidity to the Rossoneri.
The 22-year-old has played a role in AC Milan's resurgence in form and his performances have been one of the reasons that Chukwueze is struggling to get a start.
The Nigerian star has started three of the last five Serie A games but has been a substitute in the last two though he was also handed a start in the UEFA Champions League game with Slovan Bratislava.
He was one of the standout performers in the 6-1 thrashing of Sassuolo, netting a brace in the fixture to make a strong case to start in the Serie A clash with Atalanta on Friday.
Speaking ahead of their clash with Atalanta, Fonseca has revealed the reason behind handing Musah a start over Chukwueze despite the latter being the natural fit for the position
In quotes relayed by Milan News, the Portuguese gaffer said: "I remember talking about Chukwu two games ago. He's adapting well. When we need this role on the right he's progressing.
"There's no problem with him. If we think he's stronger defensively than Musah, no. But he can play this role in some games."
The 25-year-old Chukwueze has made 50 appearance for AC Milan, the majority of which has been as a substitute.
He has made 17 appearances this campaign, eight of which have been as a starter, and has chipped in three goals and an assist.
