Technical or tactical match? Super Eagles interim coach Eguavoen keeping his cards close to his chest
Published: November 14, 2024
As the Super Eagles prepare for their crucial encounter against Benin in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, interim manager Austin Eguavoen remains tight-lipped about his team's tactical approach.
Nigeria is scheduled to take-on Benin on Thursday, November 14, at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
During the pre-match press conference, Eguavoen was coy when pressed for insights into his game plan, suggesting that the journalists would have to wait until the lineup is revealed on matchday to analyze Nigeria's strategy.
"That we have to keep to our chest, we cannot say more. Tomorrow when we start, then you can analyze," Eguavoen said at the pre-match press conference." he stated.
Nigeria leads Group D with 10 points from four matches, needing only a draw to secure their place in the tournament.
In contrast, Benin sits in second with six points and is determined to clinch a victory to boost their qualification hopes.
The stakes are high, especially considering Benin's previous success against Nigeria, having defeated them 2-1 during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June.
When questioned about the prospects of Benin replicating that result, Eguavoen emphasized the distinct nature of the upcoming match.
On if Benin could win again, Eguavoen said: "We won, Benin didn't win. This is Afcon qualifiers, we are not playing the World Cup qualifiers."
Eguavoen acknowledged the challenges posed by Benin, recognizing their capabilities as a strong team.
Sharing his thoughts on Thursday's game, he said: "It's the qualifiers. Two teams are going to play tomorrow, Benin versus Nigeria.
"We feel at home here because this is where we almost became champions of the Afcon, but with all respect as well, Benin is a very good team.
"We expect a very tough game tomorrow but we've come here with an objective."
With both teams poised for a tough battle, the Super Eagles are focused on achieving their objectives as they aim to secure qualification for the biennial tournament in Morocco.
