'He knows us in and out'- Eguavoen warns Super Eagles players Rohr has inside information on Nigeria
Published: November 13, 2024Ahead of the pivotal 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Benin's Cheetahs, Austin Eguavoen, the interim manager of the Super Eagles, admitted that Benin coach Gernot Rohr has inside information about the Super Eagles and has warned his players to avoid complacency.
The match is scheduled for Thursday, November 14, at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, and carries significant implications for Nigeria's qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Currently leading Group D with 10 points from four matches, Nigeria only requires a draw to secure their place in the tournament.
However, Benin, sitting in second with six points, is desperate for a win to keep their own qualification hopes alive.
In a press conference leading up to the match, Eguavoen emphasized the importance of approaching the game with a victory mindset.
"We have worked with Gernot Rohr for so many years, he was our head coach, very good coach no doubt," Eguavoen stated at the pre-match press conference, acknowledging the tactical ability of the German tactician.
"He knows us in and out, he is part of us. We also know him inside and out. We know what he is capable of but Nigeria is a country we don't toil with. We respect, we play with the mindset to win but it is easier said than done."
While expressing respect for their opponents, Eguavoen made it clear that the Super Eagles will not underestimate Benin.
"We fight for every ball and every point and that's what we want to do tomorrow. In respect to that, Benin is not a pushover but we work hard to make sure we achieve our objective," he added.
This match also serves as an opportunity for redemption for Nigeria, following a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Benin during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Abidjan in June.
The Super Eagles will be hope to avenge that loss and solidify their path to the biennial tournament.
