2025 Afconq: Rohr explains why it will be difficult for Cheetahs to beat Super Eagles
Published: November 13, 2024Ahead of tomorrow's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Super Eagles, Benin head coach Gernot Rohr has admitted that it will be difficult to beat the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finalists once again.
The Cheetahs defeated Nigeria 2-1 in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers at Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, which is the same venue for tomorrow's fixture.
Benin will need to repeat the same to boost their chances of qualifying ahead of their final game against Libya at the 11 June Stadium next Monday.
They currently sit second in the group with six points, just a point ahead of Rwanda, who will host Libya, the bottom-placed team in the group whose hope of qualification is as slim as a toothpick
Speaking on the possibility of beating Nigeria, Rohr was quoted as saying by Foot Africa:
"Repeating the feat of June is going to be complicated. Because Nigeria is now at full strength. But we believe in it.”
Despite losing to the Cheetahs in June, the Super Eagles got their pound of flesh when they met in the opening fixture of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, beating them 3-0, and have been unbeaten since then.
A draw in tomorrow's game will seal their qualification spot with a game to spare as they would have amassed 11 points, which could also be enough to finish the qualification campaign as group winners.
