'I saw it' - Former Super Eagles midfielder's son breaks his silence on Malmo transfer links
Published: November 20, 2024Emmanuel Ekong has broken his silence on speculation linking him with a potential move to Swedish giants Malmö FF ahead of the January transfer window.
Emmanuel is the son of former Super Eagles midfielder Prince Ikpe Ekong, who was a member of the Nigeria side that finished third at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations, featuring in a group game versus Benin and the bronze medal match against Mali.
The 22-year-old forward made his senior debut for Empoli in a 2-2 Serie A draw against Salernitana in September 2022 after impressing with the club's academy.
After making his debut, he found it challenging to break into the first team, leading to loan spells at Perugia and Croatian club Istra 1961.
In Croatia, Ekong found success, scoring three goals and providing three assists in 22 games.
This performance earned him a return to Empoli, despite initial indications he might leave the club permanently.
Since his return, however, Ekong has struggled for consistent playing time. He has featured in nine league games this season, all as a substitute, accumulating just 101 minutes on the pitch.
Amid these challenges, reports have linked Ekong with a move to Malmö FF, the 27-time Allsvenskan champions.
Speaking to Fotbollskanalen, the Nigerian-Swedish forward expressed respect for Malmö but reiterated his commitment to Empoli.
"I am focused here and this is where I have a contract, but I saw it. Malmö is a great team and I have a lot of respect for them, but that's all I can say. My focus is on Empoli and then we'll see what happens in the future," Ekong said.
While his current contract with Empoli runs until 2027, Ekong acknowledged the possibility of a move, emphasizing his desire for more playing time.
"I like to take things day by day. I don't want to think too far ahead, but I want to play and do well. As long as I get to play and show off my qualities, I'm happy and I want to play at the highest level possible," he added.
Ekong also shared his ambition to score his first league goal for Empoli while stressing the importance of the team's success.
Although not a regular starter, Ekong has managed to find the net for Empoli this season in the Italian Cup.
"I think about it almost every day. It's a dream, but when I come in or if I start, I always try to help the team. The most important thing is that Empoli takes three points," he told Fotbollskanalen.
