'His stop to keep out Ndidi' - Former Watford striker hails Man Utd goalie for big saves against Leicester
Published: November 10, 2024Former Watford striker and BBC football pundit Troy Deeney has unveiled his Team of the Week following the conclusion of the matchday eleven fixtures in the Premier League.
Super Eagles stars Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Joe Aribo, Ola Aina, Taiwo Awoniyi and Paul Onuachi, plus Crystal Palace teenager Asher Agbinone and Southampton's Lesley Ugochukwu were in action for their respective clubs on gameweek 11, but none of the aforementioned players cracked the BBC Team of the Week.
Manchester United and Newcastle United have contributed the most players to the best XI - three each.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana, fullback Noussair Mazraoui and midfielder Bruno Fernandes have been selected for their outstanding performance during Manchester United's 3-0 rout of Leicester City at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Troy Deeney highlighted that he picked Onana in his Team of the Week on the back of the Cameroon goalkeeper's top drawer saves against Leicester City.
Onana made two crucial saves to deny Wilfred Ndidi, who played higher up the pitch, in the first half.
In the 25th minute, the Nigeria international headed the ball straight at Onana after Facundo Buonanotte's free-kick from the left.
And three minutes later, the Leicester City number 6 made a brilliant late run in behind the United defence but Onana was alert to the danger as he came out to save the shot.
Explaining his decision to name Onana in the Best XI, Deeney said: "People may say that 'it was only against Leicester' but he made some big saves to keep it level, particularly his stop to keep out Wilfred Ndidi. His distribution was miles better, too."
Onana has posted five clean sheets in eleven Premier League games so far this season, while conceding twelve goals.
