Iheanacho extends his scoring streak: What Sevilla striker said after scoring in another cup debut
Published: October 31, 2024Kelechi Iheanacho opened his goalscoring account for Sevilla during the 3-0 win over Las Rozas CF in the first round of the Copa del Rey at Estadio Navalcarbón on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old was handed the opportunity to impress against Las Rozas, and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands, netting a brace on his debut in the Copa del Rey to help García Pimienta's side progress to the second round of the Copa del Rey.
By finding the net against Las Rozas CF, the former Manchester City wonderkid extended his scoring streak in domestic cup debuts.
During his time in England, Iheanacho netted on his debuts in the FA Cup and League Cup as a Manchester City player, and scored in his first appearance in the Community Shield in August 2021, wearing the jersey of Leicester City.
An own goal from Luis Méndez gave Sevilla the opening goal, and Iheanacho doubled the lead on the hour mark, tapping the ball home after a brilliant piece of work from Juan Sánchez.
The Nigerian forward was on the scoresheet once again in the 79th minute, showing alertness to put the ball home after Gerard Fernández' shot was blocked.
Speaking after the game, he expressed his delight to get off the mark for Sevilla, stating that it would help his confidence.
In a press release made available to allnigeriasoccer.com by Sevilla's media team, Iheanacho said: "I'm very happy to score my first goals for this club. Obviously, I haven't had many opportunities, but I got one now, and I showed what I can do by scoring two goals, so I am very happy.
"Thanks to the fans for their support, and to my teammates and coaches for helping me as well.”
Sevilla's number 9 added that he hopes to score more goals in the Sevilla FC jersey and aims to help his team climb positions in the La Liga standings:
"Hopefully, there are more goals to come, and hopefully, Sevilla will be in the top six of LALIGA by the end of the season."
Now, Iheanacho is focused on the upcoming fixtures and wants to bring another victory to the fans at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium in their next La Liga match on Sunday, November 3, against Real Sociedad.
"I will be really happy to play in our stadium again. We have amazing fans, and they always support the team no matter what.
"Hopefully, I get a chance to play there, and hopefully, they will come out, support the team, and we win the game," he concluded.
