'So sharp off the mark' - Aina reveals the most difficult Super Eagles player to defend against
Published: October 30, 2024
Nottingham Forest fullback Ola Aina has revealed that the toughest player to defend against within the Super Eagles squad is Nantes' Moses Simon.
Aina, who has been performing well for both his club and the national team, highlighted Simon's skills and challenges on the field as particularly formidable for defenders.
In a recent interview on the Counter Attack podcast, Aina praised Simon's exceptional speed and quickness, labeling him as the most difficult player to contend with in the Super Eagles squad.
Aina, who has been in impressive form for Nottingham Forest this season, noted that while Simon's style may be somewhat predictable, his sharpness makes him a formidable opponent.
"To defend against, probably Moses Simon, because I wouldn't say he's unpredictable because you sort of know what he's going to do," Aina said on the Counter Attack Podcast.
"I think that's only because we are always with him so we know what he's going to do. He's so sharp off the mark."
Aina has demonstrated remarkable defensive skills in the Premier League, boasting a tackle success rate exceeding 60% and only receiving one yellow card in nine matches.
His defensive contributions include an average of 1.8 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game, solidifying his reputation as a reliable defender.
On the other hand, Moses Simon, is enjoying a strong season with Nantes, where he has scored two goals and provided three assists in just eight league appearances.
His ability to take on defenders is showcased by his average of 3.4 attempted dribbles per game, placing him among the most dangerous wide players in Ligue 1.
As the Super Eagles gear up for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Rwanda and Benin in November, head coach Austin Eguavoen will be looking to harness the current form of both Aina and Simon.
Their continued success at the club level is vital for Nigeria's hopes in maintaining a strong performance during the qualifiers.
