'My mother is Nigerian' - Red Bull Salzburg loanee confirms he is eligible to represent Super Eagles
Published: October 23, 2024
Red Bull Salzburg loanee Lawrence Agyekum has confirmed that he is eligible to play international football for the Super Eagles.
In search of first team opportunities, Agyekum, a product of the West African Football Academy, joined Belgian Pro League club Cercle Brugge on loan in the summer transfer transfer window.
After transferring to Red Bull Salzburg in 2022, the 20-year-old midfielder has played in four competitive matches for the Austrian Bundesliga giants and appeared 49 times for FC Liefering.
The Ghanaian-born player has revealed that he is eligible to represent the Super Eagles through his Nigerian mother.
Agyekum does not require a change of association request in order to play for the Super Eagles or Black Stars because he is uncapped at international level.
In an interview with owngoalnigeria, via Sports World Ghana, Agyekum stated: "My father is from Ghana, but my mother is Nigerian.
"I can play for both nations. That’s something people don’t know about me, and if the chance to play for the Super Eagles comes, I won’t say no."
Agyekum is understandably rooting for Ghana and Nigeria to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and 2026 World Cup.
Although the Black Stars are performing well in the World Cup qualifiers, they face a mountain to climb to secure Afcon qualification, whereas the Super Eagles are in the opposite situation.
"I have love for both countries and want to see them do well. Ghana hasn’t had the best results in AFCON qualifiers, but they’re doing well in the World Cup qualifiers. For Nigeria, it’s the reverse. I follow both closely," Agyekum added.
Legendary Leventis United defenders Leotis Boateng and John Benson, along with 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner Orlando John, all Ghanaians, chose to play for the Super Eagles instead of the Black Stars.
