Man Utd icon has his say on whether the referee was right not to send off Chelsea CB Tosin
Published: October 20, 2024Manchester United icon Gary Neville has had his say on whether Tosin Adarabioyo should have been red-carded during Chelsea's 2-1 loss to Liverpool in the Premier League fixture played on Sunday evening at Anfield.
Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the lead from the penalty spot after Levi Colwill had brought down Curtis Jones in the penalty area and the Egyptian forward stepped up to convert the penalty, sending Robert Sánchez the wrong way.
Three minutes after the restart, Nicholas Jackson put the away side on level terms, calmly slotting the ball home from Moisés Caicedo's brilliant pass.
The Reds would instantly react as Salah magnificently picked out the run of Jones, who did just enough to nick the ball past Sánchez, which proved enough to hand Liverpool the maximum points.
One of the talking points in the game happened in the 6th minute when Chelsea central defender Tosin brought down Diogo Jota, who would have been through on goal, if not for the foul.
The Liverpool players protested to the referee John Brooks, but he waived the call and awarded the Chelsea defender a yellow card.
Despite playing on after the incident, Jota wasn't able to fully shake off the tackle and was replaced by Darwin Núñez on the half-hour mark
Commenting on the incident during his commentary duties on Sky Sports, Neville thought that the referee got his decision not to send Tosin off spot on.
"The difference from the Arsenal one yesterday is there's defenders around him. It's so clumsy. The ball is moving away too, but it won't help Tosin's confidence."
Tosin was taken off in the 53rd minute and was replaced by Benoit Badiashile.
