What Brentford loanee Onyeka told Augsburg coach after Super Eagles hostage situation in Libya
Published: October 17, 2024
FC Augsburg manager Jess Thorup has revealed what he was told by Brentford loanee Frank Onyeka on the Super Eagles ordeal in Libya.
The Super Eagles were given a hostile reception by the Libyan authorities ahead of the second leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against the Northern African side that was supposed to take place on Tuesday night.
The Nigerian contingent crew had their flight diverted and, upon touching down, were denied entrance into any hotel and were struck at the airport, where they spent the night.
After being subjected to inhumane treatment, the players decided not to play the game and returned to Nigeria, with the Confederation of African Football now set to give a verdict on the incident very soon.
Onyeka was part of the Super Eagles crew and narrated his ordeal to Thorup upon his return to Augsburg.
Speaking in his pre-match conference ahead of their fixture against SC Freiburg on Saturday, Thorup revealed what he was told by the Brentford loanee about the incident.
In quotes relayed by sport1, Thorup said: "He said it was crazy, 14, 16 hours without food or drink.
"He came back on Thursday morning. Everything is OK. He is fully focused on Freiburg,"
Onyeka has had a strong start to the season with the Bundesliga side, marking his debut with an assist and has started every game that he has been in the matchday squad.
