'No grounds for accusations' - Libyan Football Federation fires back at Nigeria over hostage reports
Published: October 14, 2024
The Libyan Football Federation has addressed accusations made by the Nigerian Football Federation regarding the hostage situation involving the Nigerian national team prior to their crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
The statement follows reports that the Super Eagles were stranded at Al Abraq Airport for 15 hours due to the unexpected diversion of their flight.
The Super Eagles, who are set to face Libya's Mediterranean Knights on Tuesday, October 15, at the Benin Stadium for the return leg of their AFCON qualifier, had previously secured a narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg, thanks to a late goal from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
The trouble began when the Nigerian team departed on October 13 via a chartered ValueJet aircraft, only to have their flight diverted just an hour before landing.
Instead of reaching their destination, they found themselves at Al Abraq Airport, located over two hours away from their intended venue.
In light of the distressing experience, players, led by William Troost-Ekong, expressed their discontent and even considered withdrawing from the upcoming match.
The situation prompted the Libyan Football Federation to clarify that the diversion was not an act of malice but rather a consequence of standard air traffic control protocols.
In a press release, the Libyan Federation expressed disappointment over the misunderstandings, emphasizing, "We express our deep concern over reports circulating regarding the diversion of the Nigerian national team flight ahead of the AFCON qualifier in Libya."
"While we regret any inconvenience caused, we wish to stress that such incidents can occur as a result of routine air traffic control protocols."
"Security procedures or logistical challenges that affect international air travel. These procedures are a normal part of operations at international airports, and delays or diversions are not uncommon
The Federation vehemently rejected the notion that the Libyan security forces or the football administration had any intention of sabotaging the Nigerian team's travel arrangements, asserting, "We reiterate our full respect to our Nigerian teammates and wish to reassure them that the diversion of their flight"
"It was not intentional. There are no grounds for accusations that the Libyan security forces or the Libyan Football Federation deliberately caused this incident. Such allegations are contrary to our values and principles, and we strongly reject any allegations that suggest bad faith or sabotage in this regard."
They also highlighted the challenges that their own national team faced upon arriving in Nigeria for the third match in the AFCON qualifiers, without making public accusations or questioning the integrity of the Nigerian authorities.
"It is important to note that our national team faced major challenges upon arriving in Nigeria last week to play the third match in the AFCON qualifiers. Despite the difficulties we faced, we did not make public accusations or question the integrity of the Nigerian authorities. Football, at its core, is about uniting people."
"We are committed to the spirit of justice and mutual respect, both on and off the field.
The Libyan Football Federation also highlighted their commitment to hospitality and respect for all visiting teams, stating, "In Libya, we pride ourselves on our long-standing tradition of welcome and hospitality. Our priority has always been to treat all visiting teams, including our brothers from Africa and all other international delegations, with respect and appreciation."
"Hosting such events is a great honor for us, and we strive to ensure that all teams feel safe and respected as our guests. This commitment to equality and hospitality is an essential part of our culture and tradition."
In conclusion, the federation expressed its desire for the misunderstanding to be resolved amicably, reaffirming their dedication to fostering unity, sportsmanship, and friendship in the realm of football.
"We hope that this misunderstanding will be resolved in a spirit of understanding and goodwill. Our doors are open to our Nigerian brothers and all African teams and we will continue to promote the spirit of unity, sportsmanship and friendship in the world of football," they stated.
