'God didn't want it' - Porto striker Omorodion discusses his failed move to Chelsea
Published: October 12, 2024Porto striker Samu Omorodion has opened up about his near-transfer to Chelsea this summer.
The 20-year-old was on the verge of joining Chelsea, having completed a medical while still competing for Spain at the Olympics.
However, the transfer fell through due to Chelsea's inability to finalize personal terms with the player.
Omorodion ultimately moved to Porto from Atlético de Madrid and has excelled since the transfer.
The forward, of Nigerian descent, has scored seven goals in seven games across all competitions, including a brace against Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League.
In an interview with RTVE via Daily Mail, he reflected on the situation, expressing disappointment with the situation.
Omorodion described the situation as unfortunate, revealing that he was close to joining the Blues, but felt it wasn’t meant to be.
"I had a very difficult summer. We had a really bad time because in the end everyone knows that I was close to signing, but it's true that if it didn't happen, it was for a reason, because God didn't want it.” he said.
Despite the setback, Omorodion is grateful to Porto for the opportunity and is focused on his future.
"I'm also very grateful to Porto for giving me the opportunity when things looked at their worst, and I'm very happy with where I am now.
"I've left the past behind and now I'm focused on what's coming to me."
As he continues to impress in Portugal, Omorodion remains eligible to play for Nigeria's Super Eagles, having yet to make an appearance for the Spain's senior national team.
