'He should know where not to dribble' - Super Eagles interim coach warns Chukwueze ahead of Afconq
Published: October 08, 2024
Super Eagles interim manager Austin Eguavoen has delivered a clear message to winger Samuel Chukwueze ahead of the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya.
Eguavoen, who has steered the team to positive results in recent matches against Benin and Rwanda, is focused on maintaining the team's momentum as they aim to secure their spot in the African Cup of Nations.
Following a 3-0 victory over Benin and a goalless draw against Rwanda, the Super Eagles currently lead their group with four points.
However, victories in the upcoming matches against Libya could potentially seal their qualification for the AFCON tournament.
In preparation for the crucial games, Eguavoen has emphasized his preference for versatile players who can adapt to different positions on the field.
He highlighted the importance of players understanding their roles and responsibilities within the team structure.
"I am a coach who likes players who can play more than one position. If you can play more than one position, you're game with me," Eguavoen told NFF TV.
"I don't want rigid players, I want players who can express themselves but we have a job to do, we have formation which we want to have balance at every given time.
"When we have that balance, wherever you find yourself in the field of play, do the job, but you must know what you have to do when you're in that position."
Eguavoen specifically addressed Chukwueze, urging the talented winger to make smart decisions on the field, particularly when it comes to dribbling.
While acknowledging Chukwueze's skill in dribbling, Eguavoen emphasized the need for the player to exercise restraint and choose the right moments to showcase his abilities.
"You can imagine Chukwueze come to defence to help, he gets the ball, what does he do, not dribble.
"We know how good he is when he has to dribble but he should know where to dribble, he should know where not to dribble."
"If he comes in he has to do his defensive duty. It's a responsibility but he knows what to do, so these are things we go through every now and then."
Nigeria is set to play against Libya in Uyo on Friday, October 11, with a return match scheduled for Tuesday, October 15 at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium in Benghazi.
As the Super Eagles commence preparation to face Libya in the double encounter, Eguavoen's message serves as a reminder to the players of the importance of discipline, tactical awareness, and teamwork in pursuit of their AFCON qualification goals.
