'It was my only dream' - History-making striker Olatunji reacts after scoring in UEFA Champions League
Published: September 19, 2024Nigerian attacker Victor Olatunji ended a seven-game goal drought in style by scoring on his Champions League debut as Sparta Prague thrashed Salzburg 3-0 at the Stadion Letná in Prague on Wednesday.
And in doing so, he entered into the history books as the first Nigerian player to score and provide an assist on his Champions League debut.
Filip Panák lofted a ball over the Salzburg backline to Olatunji, who brilliantly slotted it past Salzburg goalkeeper Blaswich into the far corner from a tight angle to double Sparta Prague's advantage in the 42nd minute.
Two minutes before the hour mark, the Sparta Prague number 7 turned from scorer to provider, teeing up Qazim Laci for the third goal of the contest.
Including the qualifying rounds of the Champions League, Olatunji has caught the eye, registering five goal involvements in seven matches.
Olatunji said scoring in his Champions League debut was a dream come true and explained why he chose to assist Laci rather than attempt a shot on goal.
Speaking to UEFA's official website, the Sparta Prague number 7 said: "I feel good, I feel great and I'm very happy for myself, because I worked hard to get to this point. I'm also happy for the team."
Reacting to his goal and assist, Olatunji said: "I just wanted to put the ball in the back of the net. It was my only dream for tonight. We always play like a team – I really enjoyed it.
"For the third goal, I could have shot but I wanted to give us a bigger chance [of scoring], because missing that chance would not have been good for the team."
Olatunji joined Sparta Prague last summer after spells with Inter Bratislava, Železiarne Podbrezová, Mattersburg, Alki Oroklini, AEK Larnaca and Slovan Liberec.
