Done deal: Premier League new boys Southampton loan out Flying Eagles-eligible centre-back
Published: July 05, 2024Through official channels, Premier League new boys Southampton have confirmed that Flying Eagles-eligible centre-back Zach Awe has joined League Two club Accrington Stanley, subject to Premier League, EFL, and FA ratification.
In search of first team football, Awe will spend the whole of the 2024-2025 campaign on loan at the fourth tier club
He joined the Saints in August 2023 from Arsenal's academy, where he had previously spent over 10 years in their youth ranks.
In his first season at Southampton, he did not receive a single call-up for a senior game but was a key player for the B team, making 21 appearances.
As an Arsenal player, Awe faced Football League opposition in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, featuring in matches against Wigan Athletic, Cambridge United, Ipswich Town, Northampton Town, Stevenage.
Commenting on his transfer to Accrington Stanley, the Greenwich-born player said: "I moved to Southampton last season, did a year in youth football, and I needed to get on and play men's football, so when the call came from the gaffer, it made sense.
"I like to read the game, I do play out a lot, even though I'm big and have a huge frame, I am good on the ball and I do like to play, but at the same time, I'm really eager to defend, block shots, and hopefully score goals.
"I just want to play as many games as possible, perform well for the team, and help the group and the lads out."
Awe has a contract with Southampton until the end of the 2026-2027 season and will be aiming to make his professional debut for Accrington Stanley next month.
