Official: West Ham confirm Nigerian midfielder has signed his first professional contract
Published: July 04, 2024With a statement on their official website, West Ham United have confirmed that teenage Nigerian midfielder Tyron Akpata has signed his first professional contract with the club.
Although the length of the contract has not been disclosed, allnigeriasoccer.com has been told that the new deal will keep him at the Londoners until the end of the 2025-2026 season, having put pen to paper on a two-year contract.
Akpata has appeared in 39 matches in the U18 Premier League, including 32 starts, scoring four goals and has four assists.
The 17-year-old was a member of the Hammers side that claimed the U18 Premier League South and FA Youth Cup double in 2022-2023.
Known for his energy and leadership on the field, Akpata captained West Ham in the last season's FA Youth Cup and scored three goals in 26 matches throughout the 2023-2024 campaign.
In his first words after putting pen to paper, he told the club's official website: "It’s a great feeling to sign this contract, and I’m so chuffed to start a new chapter at West Ham United as a professional footballer.
"I’ve been here for a few years now, which does make it extra special. I’ve worked under some different coaches, who have all helped me massively with my development, and I hope I can continue growing in the future."
Akpata is also eligible to represent the Young Lions by virtue of hailing from Dagenham, England.
