Aston Villa join Tottenham Hotspur in race to sign Nigerian defender
Published: June 24, 2024Aston Villa have joined Tottenham in the race to sign Fiorentina's Italian-born Nigerian right-back Michael Kayode.
According to HITC, Aston Villa have opened talks with Fiorentina over the possibility of the talented fullback moving to Villa Park as a replacement for Matty Cash.
Cash could be on the verge of leaving the Midlands side as he has been linked with seven-time European champions and Serie A giants AC Milan.
The departure of the Polish defender will leave a huge vacuum in Unai Emery's side and they have chosen Kayode as a likely replacement for Cash.
The Italy youth international was one of the standout youngsters in the Serie A last season, featuring in 26 games in the Italian top-flight, the majority of which he started.
Having impressed in his debut season, the 19-year-old is one of the hottest prospects in European football and it comes as no surprise that he is being highly sought after.
A move to Aston Villa could be of more benefit to Kayode than Tottenham due to the possibility of having his game time reduced with the latter.
Aston Villa will have no natural right back at the club if Cash leaves, thereby allowing Kayode to go straight into the starting lineup but a move to Spurs will see him contend with Pedro Porro who also did well last season in the Premier League.
