Torino will not trigger the option to sign ex-Olympic Eagles star on a permanent deal
Published: June 17, 2024Italian Serie A club Torino will not trigger the option to sign former Nigeria U23 international David Okereke on a permanent deal.
Okereke arrived at the Maroons in the winter transfer market with a purchase option included in the loan deal.
The Cremonese-owned player disappointed at Torino, where he did not score or assist in 248 minutes of action spread across nine matches, three of which he started.
According to Toro News, the deadline for activating the purchase clause that Torino included in the five-month loan agreement expired on June 14.
The report added that Okereke is set to return to his parent club Cremonese after failing to impress the decision makers at Torino.
Okereke is not motivated to play in the second tier of Italian football and it remains to be seen whether the 2019 Super Eagles invitee will be loaned out again or sold permanently.
Cremonese bottled the chance to make an immediate return to the Serie A after they were beaten on aggregate by Venezia in the Serie B playoff final on June 2.
Since joining the Grigiorossi from Club Brugge in the summer of 2022, Okereke has scored 11 goals and provided five assists in 57 appearances across all competitions.
Okereke will enter the last year of his contract with Cremonese on July 1, 2024.
