17yo Super Falcons-eligible striker wins quadruple with Barcelona; unused sub in Champions League final
Published: May 25, 2024Super Falcons-eligible striker Vicky Lopez has won the UEFA Women's Champions League with Barcelona for the second consecutive season.
The three-cap Spain international watched on from the bench as Barcelona completed an unprecedented quadruple after beating French opponents Lyon 2-0 at Estadio de San Mamés in Bilbao on Saturday evening to retain their Champions League title.
The Blaugrana had won the Liga F, Copa de la Reina and Supercopa de España before today's meeting with Lyon.
Barcelona manager Jonatan Giráldez picked Caroline Graham Hansen, Salma Paralluelo and Mariona Caldentey as his three forward players, leaving Lopez on the bench.
Lopez featured in eight matches in this season's Champions League and was given minutes in the semifinal, first leg loss to Chelsea at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys (Barcelona)
After a goalless first half, Barcelona had the breakthrough in the 63rd minute when Aitana Bonmati's low shot deflected off Vanessa Gilles and ended up in the back of the net.
In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Alexia Putellas sealed the win with a powerful, left-footed finish into the roof of the net.
Born in Madrid to a Nigerian mother and a Spanish father, Lopez could become cap-tied to Spain, her country of birth, if she is named in the squad for the Olympic Games and participates in the competition.
